Google hits back after Apple exec says AI is hurting search
Google is pushing back after Apple executive Eddy Cue recently questioned whether Artificial Intelligence (AI) would harm the future of search. In an interview at the WSJ Tech Live conference, Cue expressed hesitance about the impact of AI technology on search engines. He suggested that AI could diminish the relevance of search results by making it easier to provide limited, personalized answers that may not be applicable to the broader population.
Google, however, seems unfazed by Cue's concerns. The company is actively developing AI technology and has implemented it in its search engine to deliver more precise responses to users. Its foray into AI began with Google Assistant, a conversational AI-powered virtual assistant, which has gained popularity for its ability to offer quick solutions to varied problems.
Google's parent company, Alphabet, is also investing heavily into AI research and development through its subsidiary, DeepMind. DeepMind has made significant advancements in the field, with breakthroughs like AlphaFold, a protein-folding program powered by AI, which could revolutionize drug discovery and biomedical research. Alphabet also invested in entities working with generative AI, like The Pudocode Company, to explore its potential applications.
In response to all these developments, Google has assured users that its continued AI integration will only improve search quality. The company maintains that AI helps in processing large volumes of data to provide more personalized and accurate responses. It is particularly useful in the era of information overload, where sorting relevant results becomes increasingly difficult.
In conclusion, while the CEO of Apple may harbor concerns about AI's impact on search engines, Google is convinced that it will, in fact, enhance search algorithms. Only time will tell if AI-enhanced search fulfills Google's promises, but for now, they're using the technology to its fullest.
